Error: Message could not be opened from Outbox folder.

Submitted on 08/05/1999

When you are connected to your Internet service provider (ISP) and you attempt to download mail messages, you may be prompted for your password again. CAUSE This behavior can occur if you have two identical accounts with different names. RESOLUTION To resolve this behavior, remove the duplicate mail accounts. To do so, follow these steps: 1. In Outlook Express, click Accounts on the Tools menu. 2. Click the Mail tab. 3. Click a duplicate mail account, and then click Remove. Repeat this step until only one instance of the mail account remains. 4. Click Close.

When you attempt to import messages into Outlook Express 4.5 from Netscape Communicator 4.5, you may receive the following error message:

Submitted on 08/05/1999

The index for mail folder "Trash" is out of date. Run Netscape and open the mail folder "Trash" before importing. You may also see this error message for other folders, such as the Inbox, Outbox, Sent, Unsent, Drafts, or Templates folder. CAUSE This behavior occurs if the Netscape Communicator .snm file cannot be parsed correctly. If the .snm file becomes damaged, Outlook Express cannot read it correctly when you are importing messages. Netscape Communicator may still be able to read the damaged .snm file and display the messages. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, rebuild the .snm files: Quit Netscape Communicator 4.5. Delete all of the .snm files in the following folder: System Folder: Preference: Netscape Users: Username: Mail NOTE: Do not delete the associated files that do not have an extension; these contain your actual messages. For example, delete the Trash.snm file, but do not delete the Trash file. To rebuild the .snm files, restart Netscape Communicator and click each folder under the Local Mail folder. When you click a folder, Netscape Communicator checks for that folder's .snm file. If the file does not exist, Netscape communicator re-creates it automatically. After you click all the folders and the .snm files are rebuilt, Outlook Express should be able to import the messages from Netscape Communicator correctly. MORE INFORMATION There are two files for each folder in Netscape Communicator. For example, one is named Inbox and the other is named Inbox.snm. The Inbox file is a text file that contains the e-mail messages, and the Inbox.snm file is a binary index of the e-mail messages.

When you try to import Outlook Express 4.0 messages into Outlook Express 5, you may receive the following error message:

Submitted on 08/05/1999

No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open. Please select another folder or try closing applications that may have files open. CAUSE This issue can occur if your Outlook Express 4.0 messages are not stored in a folder named Mail. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, create an e-mail folder named Mail, copy the message files into the Mail folder, and then point the Import wizard to the folder that contains the Mail folder. For example, if your messages are in the c:\test\mail folder, you would browse to the c:\test folder to import the messages.

When I try to encrypt my messages, this is the message I get: "You do not have a valid digital IDs in the address book."

Submitted on 08/05/1999

Check the to see if something is entered in the Reply To field under Tools | Accounts | Mail | Your Server | Properties | General. If so, clear the Reply To field. If that doesn't work, then maybe you have selected "Include myself when sending encrypted mail" but you haven't added your own Digital ID to a WAB entry for youself. To do that, simply send yourself a Digitally signed message and then add your certificate to the WAB.

Links In Outlook Express mail and news don't work.

Submitted on 08/05/1999

If you click on links in OE mail and news and they do not work, it's because Outlook Express is not your default mail and news program and IE4.0 is not your default browser. Do this: 1) In Outlook Express, go to Tools | Options and check to make sure that "Make Oulook Express my default mail program" and "Make Outlook Express my default news reader." ..." are checked. 2) In IE4.0, go to View | Internet Options | Programs and select OE for mail and news. Also, be sure "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it is the default browser" is checked.

Outlook Express refuses to remember passwords

Submitted on 08/05/1999

Despite telling Outlook Express (OE) to remember your passwords, it keeps forgetting them. Try this: Go to the DOS prompt (Start/Shut Down/Restart the computer in MS-DOS Mode). For Windows 95 go to your \Windows\Sytem folder, for Windows NT go to your \WinNT\System32 folder. Now type: pstores -install Now give OE your details and it should save them.

Incorrect date stamp on mail messages?

Submitted on 08/05/1999

If the Time Zone is incorrect on your computer, usually, the time will be posted on your emails incorrectly even though the time is set correctly on your computer. To change this on Win95 and NT, double-click on the clock at the bottom right. Then select Time Zone and put the correct one in, if it is wrong.

I can't open my sent items folder in Outlook Express

Submitted on 08/05/1999

Sounds like your sent items folder is corrupted. If you don't have anything important in there, just exit OE and delete sent items.mbx and sent items.idx; they'll be recreated the next time you start OE. If you *do* have important information in that folder, you can open sent items.mbx in a text editor and print it out before deleting it, or just open it in a text editor and then save it as a text file. This same procedure applies to the inbox.idx & inbox.mbx, outbox.idx & outbox.mbx and deleted items.idx and deleted items.mbx files if they become corrupted.

Can't delete mail

Submitted on 08/05/1999

Your Deleted Items box is corrupt. This can happen from time to time for a variety of reasons. Close Outlook Express, then open a window on your OE mail folder. By default it is at: C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Mail Delete the 2 files Deleted Items.idx and Deleted Items.mbx. When you re-open OE, it will create a new Deleted Items.

Canceling a posted message on the usenet newsgroups

Submitted on 08/05/1999

To cancel or delete a message that YOU authored and already have posted to a newsgroup, use Compose | Cancel Message. Upon issuing the Cancel command, you should get an acknowledgment from News that reads as follows: "Your cancellation request has been sent to the news server. The canceled message may not disappear immediately." Despite this message, your post may not disappear for a couple of possible reasons. First, if you have changed your e-mail address or the name in your account properties since the time of the original post, canceling the post will not work. The settings for both your name and e-mail address need to match precisely for the cancel command to work. Second, cancellations are handled entirely from the server-side and some servers, for security reasons, do not permit cancellation fo messages. For more information, read Knowledge Base Article Q164420. If you happen to be working offline and have not posted your message, simply go to the Outbox, right click on the message and select "Delete."

Thunder and Lightning

Submitted on 07/27/1999

Most people unplug their computers during a thunderstorm. Most don't realize that the modem needs to be disconnected as well. When lightning strikes, and your computer is plugged in, the spike needs to go through the circuit breakers and then the fuses and transformers in the power supply. The modem is connected directly to the motherboard with no safe guards! Even if you have the phone line going through a surge protector, it’s always safer to unplug it. The best case scenario is the modem will not work, or refuse to hang up. The worst case is.....well, you can imagine.

What is PING?

Submitted on 04/30/1999

Ping is a lovely little utility that comes with all microsoft operating systems.
If you have a MAC you will have to hunt one down.
Ping allows you to "ping" (like a submarine) something to see if it is there and "alive"
To do it on the windows 95/98, go to start --> programs
--> MS-DOS Prompt.
At the prompt (C:\WINDOWS>) type "ping 155.212.1.13" (no quotes)
This will give you a response like:

C:\WINDOWS>ping 155.212.1.13

Pinging 155.212.1.13 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 155.212.1.13: bytes=32 time=210ms TTL=255
Reply from 155.212.1.13: bytes=32 time=148ms TTL=255
Reply from 155.212.1.13: bytes=32 time=180ms TTL=255
Reply from 155.212.1.13: bytes=32 time=197ms TTL=255

Ping statistics for 155.212.1.13:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 2ms, Average = 1ms

C:\WINDOWS>

The time is not important
Even if you get some that say "request timed out" is OK.
If you get all four saying "request timed out" then you have a connection problem.
Next we will "ping" www.ids.net.
At the prompt (C:\WINDOWS>)(Actually the prompt can say anything, as long as it starts with C:\)
Type "ping www.ids.net"(no quotes)
You should get a reponse similar to this:

Pinging www.ids.net [199.26.223.10] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 199.26.223.10: bytes=32 time=200ms TTL=255
Reply from 199.26.223.10: bytes=32 time=120ms TTL=255
Request timed out.
Reply from 199.26.223.10: bytes=32 time=183ms TTL=255

Ping statistics for 199.26.223.10:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 28ms, Average = 8ms

Remember some "Request timed out" is expected.
If you can ping an IP address (I.E. 155.212.1.13) AND you can ping a web address (I.E. www.ids.net), then you know you have a complete connection and everything should work as expected.

Windows 95/98 won't save my password.

Submitted on 04/30/1999

Option available but not working: The first thing to note when trying to fix this problem is that for the Save Password option to work, you must successfully connect to the remote system at least once with the option checked before Windows 95 will save your password. This also means that if you have more than one connection profile, you need to establish at least one successful connection with each profile that you wish to save your password with, even if your password is the same across all the profiles.

Option not available (grayed out): There are a number of reasons why this may be occurring, and there are a number of ways you can try and get around the problem. One method is to change your Computer Name to the login ID you use for your Internet Service Provider (ISP). You can modify your computer name by double-clicking the Network icon in the Control Panel, then selecting the Identification tab (you'll have to reboot for the change to take affect).

Sometimes, uninstalling and re-installing Dial-up Networking can solve this problem. In the Control Panel, choose the Add/Remove Programs option. Then go to the Windows Setup tab, and uncheck the Dial-up Networking option. Press OK until all the dialog boxes are closed, then reboot. Follow these same instructions and re-check the Dial-up Networking option. Then try your connection again.

Some users have had luck solving this problem by installing the Client for Microsoft Networks. In the Control Panel, open the Network option. If the Client for Microsoft Networks is not at or near the top of the list, press the Add button, then choose Client, Microsoft, and then Client for Microsoft Networks. Press OK until all the dialog boxes are closed, then reboot.

The last thing to try is deleting your Windows password file. Do a search on your system for *.PWL, then delete or rename them. Reboot your system, and you'll notice that Windows will ask for a user name and password to log in. You're now re-creating this password information in your system. You don't have to enter a password here if you don't want to use one every time you log in, but you do need to enter a user name. This will rebuild the password file, and may allow your Dial-up Networking to save your dial-up password.

More information on this bug is available from Microsoft at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q148/9/25.asp and http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q137/3/61.asp.

Can't send mail? Unknown error?
Submitted on 04/30/1999

There are a few things you can check:
1.) Is the outgoing mail server "smtp.ids.net"(no quotes)?
2.) Is your e-mail address correct?
3.) Are you connected directly to IDS?
4.) If the messages are in your "outbox", are you clicking on "send and recieve"?

If you don't have the correct server, the mail client won't be able to find the server.
If you don't have the correct address, the server will think that your trying to disguise yourself.
If you are not connected..... 'nuff said
If you are not connected directly to IDS, the server wil think that you are trying to "spam" people. Just use the smtp server of your provider and it should go without a hitch.
Some programs are setup so that you have to send the message THEN click on "send and receive"
